Update on Cal’s Room

Saturday, July 18th, 2009

Last night we (Fred, Cal and I) went shopping.  We got Calvin’s birthday presents from us; things for his big boy room!  We ended up no getting a different bedding set then we had planned on.  We went against our original idea because of the colors, what we ended up getting will match more “boy accessories” than the monster bedding, in the long run.  And it’s still cute!

We also got him a little night light and a hanging storage container.  Now all we need to do is decide on what color to paint his walls (we’ve primered, and are planning on painting on Tuesday, well Fred and one of my brothers are!  Cal and I are going shopping with my grandma).  Any suggestions?  We are trying to stay semi-neutral or light, but we don’t really want white.  Maybe a very pale/washed out blue or gray.

Next, I’d like to get him some storage space, like this, from Target, but we’ll have to wait a bit.

Yesterday I also got some great deals at a garage sale, lots of toys, books, clothes and toys for Cal and a pack-n-play and umbrella stroller in prime condition!  I love garage sales :)   The let down of the day was this little car I found, similar to this one, but I think it was a different brand.  Someone was selling it for $20, it looked to be in great condition for being used, but when I was talking to Fred about getting it, someone else decided to buy it.  Calvin would love riding around the neighborhood in a little car, rather than his stroller on our walks.  So if anyone needs a birthday gift… :)   Just a suggestion!

Week in review: Busy Busy!

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Last week was a long and busy week:

  • Monday Calvin and I went to a friend’s house.  He loves playing with other kids, he likes to take their toys…
  • I had a doctor’s appointment in which they tested my blood sugar for gestational diabetes, which I do not have.  Yay! (I don’t know what I’d do without my ice cream).  From now on, I have to go in every two weeks, rather than once a month, to monitor Baby J and his growth.  I can’t believe I’m that far along already!  Time is flying!
  • While Fred worked hard (on the mountain biking trails at Quail Hollow), Cal and I took another trip to the Akron Zoo.  We went with his babysitter and the other kids she watches.  This time, we were able to get a good look at the tigers and jellyfish (Calvin loves the jellyfish!), since it wasn’t so crowded.
  • Saturday was Calvin’s 11 month birthday.  In just one month he’ll be 1 year old.  He’s grown so much!
  • While we were busy running around all week, Cal got his first cold, and then kindly shared it with Fred and I!  Which has made the last few days very long.  He seems to be feeling better now, but between his cold  (and ours) and cutting 2 new teeth, I think we are in for another long week this week!

Oh, and on top of that, our computer still isn’t completely fixed.  Fred has been working hard to get it up an running (with the help of the HP tech guys), so hopefully it’ll be ready to go in the next couple of days.

Unbelievable!

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

Today is July 11, 2009.  That’s not the unbelievable part… what’s unbelievable is that Calvin will be a year old in exactly one month!  The year has flown by!  I’m not ready for my baby to be a year old yet.  But I think he’s ready, in fact, I don’t think he ever really counted on being a baby:

  • He has always preferred to stand, since he was about a month old
  • Cal gets very frustrated when he can’t do something (like get a toy on the other side of the room) the first time he tries.
  • Has had no interest in bottles at all, ever.
  • Is all about roaming the house in search of new things to get into.

Ok, now I’m not going to recap the last 11 months (we’ll wait for his actual birthday to do that), I just wanted to post a little bit about his upcoming birthday for those of you who actually visit this site.

I’ve been asked by a few people about what Cal needs/wants for his birthday.  Honestly, he doesn’t need much, but here’s a list of ideas (in case you feel like getting him something, which I am not suggesting that anyone has to do!):

  • 18 month and up clothes for Fall and Winter.  Currently, he wears between 12-18 month stuff (he weighs 20 lbs now), so by Fall he’ll be up a size I’m sure.
  • Cal is getting a big boy room so he can give his nursery to his little brother, we have a new bed for him with a whole new theme: monsters.
  • The furniture is black (yes, we are attempting to put him in a “big boy” bed; twin size).  I just couldn’t see the point in buying another crib, but that’s another story.  Here’s a peak at what his bedding will look like (it’s from Target):
  • I’d like to get some storage containers and fun things for his room, so anyone who wants to help with that is more than welcome!
  1. he likes things that light up or make noise.
  2. He loves any of the Fisher Price Little People sets.
  3. Cal would love an big boy activity center, like the one here. The activity center has been bought (yay for Grandma and Grandpa J!), so here’s another suggestion: a steer and stroll tricycle or car for our evening walks.  For now, Cal likes the stroller, but I can see him loving our walks in something like this.
  4. And he likes books, the little board books are what he’s into now, with pages he can flip on his own (and I don’t have to worry about him tearing pages and eating them).  We read a lot, so if it’s not a board book, we’ll add it to his collection and read it before bed or nap at some point!

That’s all I can think of for now, but I just wanted to put some suggestions out there.  We will be having a birthday celebration for him, I will let you know the exact details when I get it all together (within the next week for sure).
