Fast and Easy, pretty much

That explains Laura’s birth story.  Two months ago today went like this…

I’m not sure when my labor with Laura actually started. I had contractions that I thought were real in the middle of the night/early in the morning on Sunday/Monday that woke me up every hour or so. So, on Monday morning when I got up, I told Fred that I was having contractions and that he should probably call off work (we both assumed that since my labors were pretty short with both boys that this one would go quickly too). His summer job is at an adventure camp with middle school kids. They take the kids to different places each day, like to Portage Lakes to canoe or different parks to mountain bike or things like that. It’s not a job he can just leave in the middle of the day. After he called off and we got the boys off to the baby sitter’s, my contractions stopped. So we took the morning and did some errands and had lunch, just Fred and I. My contractions didn’t come back all day. So we went to pick up the boys. And I cried, because I really thought that I was going into labor. I couldn’t believe I was wrong! This is my third pregnancy and I was wrong. It was embarrassing. But my contractions had stopped by 9 a.m. and didn’t come back until early Tuesday morning again.

Until around noon on Tuesday, I had contractions off and on. I didn’t pay too much attention to them though, because I was still upset about the day before. By 1:30 p.m. though, I knew it wasn’t going to be long; they were coming between 10 and 15 minutes apart and were pretty strong. We put the boys down for their naps and I went to take a shower. My contractions were coming closer together so after I got out of the shower I called my ob office. The nurse told me to come in to the office before going to the hospital, just to make sure I didn’t rush there for no reason (though I was pretty sure this was the real deal this time!). So I told Fred we needed to get the boys back up (they weren’t sleeping anyway). We went to the dr’s office first, where I was promptly told to go straight to the hospital (I was 5 cm dialated, 100% effaced and having strong contractions about 5 minutes apart). So we took the boys to the babysitter’s and then went back home, because I needed to finish packing my bag (which Fred gave me a hard time about, but really, it didn’t take me long).

I got my bag together and we got in the car. As we got to the intersection for the first main road out of our neighborhood, we remembered they were doing some construction on the road, which was limiting traffic to one lane. And a few days before, we had sat at the intersection for over 20 minutes waiting for the traffic controlling construction worker to wave us through the intersection. So Fred rolled down his window and shouted to the flagger, “My wife is in labor!” and the guy gave him a funny look, so Fred said “I’m serious!” and the guy spoke into his little radio and waved us through. As we were passing the construction, I swear I heard guys talking on their radios about “she’s in labor” One guy tried to get Fred (who was going a little fast) to slow down. I just couldn’t believe we had really just used that excuse.

We got to the hospital at about 3:30. Fred was rushing around and didn’t even want to wait on the valet parking attendant, so he found me a wheel chair, helped me out of the car (my contractions were every couple minutes by now) and parked me there while he parked the car. A nice older woman came over to wheel me out of the way and asked me if this was my first. I wasn’t really in a state for small talk, but I told her this was my 3rd. She said “good luck and God bless!” And then Fred came back, ready to wheel me in.

When we got to the labor and delivery check-in, the nurses already had everything ready for me, so I was given my bracelet and a paper to sign then Fred and the nurse wheeled me back to a room. I was pretty disappointed when I noticed the labor room they brought me to didn’t have a tub. I really attributed being able to labor in a nice warm tub to my success of going through labor with both boys drug free. So I asked the nurse if a room with a tub was available. She was a little surprised, I don’t think she had ever assisted in a birth in which the tub was used. She seemed a little nervous, but let me switch rooms anyway.
So in the room they but in the IV block (which I was not happy with), just in case I needed it later and started filling up the tub. Then the nurse checked me and said I was at 8cm. So from about in about an hour and a half, I had dilated 3cm. With the tub all full, I climbed in. I was only in there maybe 15 minutes before I felt like I had to push. So I told the nurse I was ready to get out. Then she kind of panicked because the doctor still wasn’t there. He wasn’t even in the hospital. She tried to get me to wait for him to check me one more time before starting to push, but after a few minutes, she just decided to check me her self. As she went to check, I had a contraction and she decided I was ready.

I started pushing just as the doctor came in the door. I think I pushed through 3 contractions and Laura was born. The doctor literally came in just in time to catch her. And I guess, according to Fred, he really had to catch her, because I pushed so hard she kind of shot out. By this time, I had barely been in the hospital for an hour!

Afterwards, they hooked me up to an IV (which had I known was an option I would have declined, it wasn’t necessary) and let me cuddle my itty bitty baby girl for what seemed like forever (in a good way!). With the boys I had been shooed out of the delivery room after an hour. I think I spent 3 hours there with Laura. So much different to have a baby during the day than in the middle of the night! The labor nurse was great, she never left the room while I was in labor. Then after Laura was born, she gave us a little homemade knit hat with a little flower on it. She said some of the nurses made them for newborns, but I had never been given any for the boys. Overall, I was really blessed to have yet another easy, fast labor!

July in Pictures Part I

Catching up on the last month, as usual!

Friday, July 1

Oatmeal cookies with chocolate covered raisins. Yum!

Saturday, July 2
Today we spent the day swimming at my aunt and uncle’s house. The water was a little chilly, but it was refreshing, or so I was told, since I don’t have a bathing suit that fits at 9 months pregnant and HUGE.

Oliver and his great aunt, she wasn't convincing him the pool was cool.

Calvin, however, LOVED the water!

He kept telling everyone to "get away" so he could swim on his own.

Oliver was liking the strawberries more than the water.

Sunday, July 3
I wanted to get a couple pictures of fireworks while sitting on my deck after the boys went to sleep, but I couldn’t see any. So here’s one I didn’t take, but thought looked nice (it is from Akron though)!

Next year I really want to take the boys to see fireworks.

Monday, July 4
Happy Independence Day!  We celebrated with a day at the park and ice cream.

Oliver loves his swings!

Cal loves the slide.

Blueberry Ice Cream Cone

Can't waste any ice cream goodness!

Tuesday, July 5

Hot weather and swollen feet = me feeling done with pregnancy!

Wednesday, July 6

Potty time!

Thursday, July 7

Cal told me he was going to school.

Friday, July 8
I won a contest and got a $50 gift certificate for The Vintage Pearl jewelry/keepsakes online shop. I love their stuff and ordered these:

It'll have 3 little pearls though, for my 3 babies!

Perfect!

Saturday, July 9
Today we took the boys to a little workshop at a local home improvement store. I thought the boys would love building the tow truck, but it turned out to be a little more complicated than I imagined (previous projects have been very simple). The boys lost interest after a little while, but I think they had a good time while interested.

Always wear your goggles, says Oliver.

Calvin attaching the "tow."

Handy Manny, look out! Here comes Handy Oliver!

Sunday, July 10
Today, in the hotter-than-Hades heat, we went to a birthday party for a friend’s little girl. It was at the zoo. We didn’t stay long because I felt like I was going to melt, but the boys did get to ride the carousel (and have some yummy cupcakes and sing happy birthday to their friend).

He was so happy to finally ride the carousel!

Oliver, not so much.

Monday, July 11

Oliver the Monkey

Cal the giraffe.

I’m not sure why both of them had their hands in their mouths for these pictures. Weird.

Tuesday, July 12
Here’s a picture after a fast and crazy delivery with the most important people…the doctor who caught Laura, Fred, me, and of course our baby girl!

Happy Birth Day to our little girl!

I’ve got loads of pictures to share and stories (including her wild birth story!) that I’ll add in the next few weeks, so check back! For now, I’m going to enjoy this little face and her big brothers and Dad and the happiness of family.

Per Request

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

Earlier this week I was told I need to update the site (by my demanding little brother!).  I’m in the process of finding pictures from the last half of the month still, but here’s a picture from this past week.  This is Thursday, June 30th’s picture actually…

No size jokes please.

You can’t tell in this picture really, but I had just come back from a little kid free pampering/me time.  I got my hair cut and styled (and then the humidity and heat flattened it out) and treated myself to a pedicure.  It was fabulous.

Really, no watermelon jokes!

Do you think I have dropped?

This is 7 weeks ago, so 31 weeks, for reference.

Hard to tell, right?  Fred thinks I have and I feel like I have, but it’s hard to tell in these pictures.  At my last doctor’s appointment (also on Thursday), I was told that everything looks good, all I need is a couple of contractions to get things started.  So keep your fingers crossed that this baby comes sooner than later.  We’re all ready here!

More April Showers

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Not showers, pictures! Although, on the news earlier this week, I heard that it rained all but 4 days in April this year, so I could have all rainy pictures…Anyway, here’s the rest of April!

Monday, April 18

Sally, the fat cat, Fred, and Cal. Playing.

Tuesday, April 19

Oliver loves his puppy

Wednesday, April 20

Oliver wanted to be in my 27 week belly shot.

Thursday, April 21

Isn't technology amazing? This is Laura's foot. She likes to kick at anything she can, whenever she can, which is most of the day and night now.

Friday, April 22

Today he was living up to his shirt. (and yes, I know this picture has way too much flash, it hurts my eyes to look at it, but the shirt says it all!)

Saturday, April 23

Tonight we dyed Easter eggs with the boys for the first time ever. They turned out pretty good!

Cal trying his hand at dying eggs.

Oliver liked helping too.

Then, of course, we had to cover our colored eggs with stickers!

And, of course, Cal refused any help putting his stickers on. And he did well, only cracking one egg.

Sunday, April 24
Happy Easter!

The Easter Bunny must not be so bad after all, he left some pretty cool baskets! (and of course I don't have a picture of Calvin's, I don't know how I missed it)

That silly bunny also hid our decorated eggs all over the living room! (and Cal is wearing his pajama shirt and jeans because lately he's been throwing off his pants as soon as he wakes up and running around in just his underwear, which wouldn't make for great internet pictures, so we put pants on him)

After a busy day with family, we relaxed and watched a little Sesame Street in the evening.

Monday, April 25

I love all the fresh green in spring!

Tuesday, April 26

This was on my ceiling. It was as big as my thumb print. I'm not afraid of spiders, but this guy had to go! Fred put him outside, I hope he stays there!

Wednesday, April 27

Sometimes I let them play with things they normally aren't allowed to, just so I can cook dinner in peace!

Thursday, April 28

This is full of baby girl clothes! I've got some very generous friends to pass on their gently used things!

Friday, April 29

Cal was playing so quietly, that we got suspicious. This is how we found him in the nursery.

Not long after I got out the camera, Cal abandoned his toy for other, more fun parent patience testing activities. But Oliver was right there to snatch up the robot toy, because he is always trying out what his big brother does.

Saturday, April 30
We took advantage of the weather today and went to the Akron Zoo.

Calvin loves the rope bridge, it's probably his favorite part of the zoo.

Oliver's first trip across the rope bridge.

Bonus:

Thursday, April 14
Hey, I found a picture from today (on my cell phone)!

The boys are in the dog house! HAHA!
